Project X Overview

Project X: Information

The following items included with this eBay auction are first described and then listed specifically. All original Apple Xserve boxed items (rails, screws and mounting hardware are included). Other items you may need (such as fibre channel cables, exotic mounting hardware, etc), are not included only because those items are typically custom sized, special ordered, and professionally installed, at your unique location.

Item #1 – Apple Xserve dual-G5 2.3ghz, was used as Xsan “Primary Metadata Controller”

This is the unit in the picture labeled as “Primary Server” with a “mrcontroller” removable sticker on the unit.  It is suggested for performance reasons, that one Xserve on the Xsan be designated as the metadata controller for the SAN, and each Xserve and RAID have a completely isolated gigabit Ethernet connection for passing dedicated Xsan overhead traffic. While not required, it is recommended as this system manages SAN file system functions such as file locking, space allocation and data access authorization.

The Apple Xserve G5 offers computing power in a feature-dense 1U server with dual 64-bit G5 processors.  An award-winning UNIX-based server operating system (OSX 10.4) with unlimited clients, expanded storage, PCI-X expansion, dual Gigabit Ethernet, fast I/O ports and an optical drive let Xserve G5 serve your every need to manage and harness the power and storage of this computing cluster. Get enterprise-class features and stability with the following features.

 Items # 2,3,4 – Apple G5 Cluster Nodes

In our specific configuration, these three cluster nodes worked simultaneously to process data received in order to distribute data processing loads across multiple servers. Each having the computing performance of two superscalar 2.3GHz PowerPC G5 processors, the Xserve G5 cluster node configuration is ideal for High Performance Computing Clusters (HPCC) in scientific and technical environments, as well as for workgroup clusters and rendering farms. These Xserve G5 nodes deliver identical performance and the same high-density computing power as the server — without paying for the server’s video and superdrive features you won’t use.

Item # 5 – Apple Xserve RAID with 10 installed 400MB Hard Drives

For serious data storage and protection, the high-performance, high-availability Apple Xserve dual fibre channel RAID is an ideal storage solution for file and print, desktop management, web and media streaming services, as well as cluster computing.  The Xserve dual RAID hardware is a 3U rack storage subsystem that has two independent RAID controllers each of which contains 512MB of cache, and contains the optional battery backup module per controller. The subsystem has seven drive channels per controller, and both of them are connected to the same drive chassis. Each individual drive has an additional 8MB of cache. The independent Xserve RAID controllers communicate via two 2Gb Fibre Channel host interfaces.

The Xserve RAID in this solution contains 10 hot-swappable 400GB Ultra ATA Apple hard drive modules.  The Xserve RAID can be configured, through software using Xsan, to load-balance or “stripe” across both independent 2gb fibre channels, for nearly double the performance.  This solution can “grow as you go” and could ultimately provide up to 7TB of storage across 14 drives.

Item # 6 - QLogic SANbox 5200 Fibre Channel Switch

A Fibre Channel switch provides the most flexibility and performance for your Apple Xserve RAID system. Plug servers into the fibre switch with two (or one) 2gb cables each, along with two (or one) 2gb cables on the Xserve RAID system, and optionally load-balance for more performance through Apple’s Xsan software.

Recommended by the Apple Xsan solution, the QLogic SANbox 5200 stackable switch is a leading fibre chanel switch that delivers breakthrough ease-of-use with wizard-based installation, the ability to scale to 64 ports without losing a single port to inter-switch links, blazing 10Gb performance, and complete stack management from a single application.  We have the SANbox 5200 upgraded and licensed for 16 ports total.  There are 4 Apple-certified fibre channel transceivers included (for SFP copper to fibre cable connectivity).  In addition, each Apple fibre channel device comes with its own Apple-provided SFP copper patch cable (M9378G/A, SFP/SFP 2.0M COPPER FBR CHNL C).

Item # 7 – AppleCare Service Contracts

All of the Apple hardware products have an already activated AppleCare support agreement.

AppleCare Premium Service and Support provides up to three years of coverage (from the initial activation date of approximately May 2005), for Xserve or Xserve RAID hardware with limited “up-and-running” support for Mac OS X software. Apple provides 24/7 telephone and email support with 30-minute response. For hardware repairs, depending on your location, Apple-certified technicians provide onsite response during business hours.

AppleCare Xsan Support delivers a year of priority phone and email support (for a single unit, from the initial activation date of approximately May 2005) for your Apple Xsan storage deployment. You’ll have direct access to Apple’s dedicated Xsan Support team. These experts provide in-depth problem-solving assistance with Xsan and RAID Admin software. They’ll also troubleshoot Apple hardware running Xsan, as well as interconnectivity between Mac, Xserve and Xserve RAID systems (if you purchase additional AppleCare Xsan Support agreements for the remaining units).
